Circumspect neighbours dance with enough distance between each other to satisfy a vicar chaperoning a school dance. The world watches a leader throw a strop with an admittedly often deplorable press and somehow convince grown adults it\u2019s in their best interest to drink cleaning products. And last week it was Christmas, at least here in our cozy pocket of Far East Sussex.<\/p>\n<p>On St. George&#8217;s day the mail carrier left presents in the plague box outside the front door.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/stgeorge.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10371\" src=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/stgeorge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/stgeorge.jpg 550w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/stgeorge-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Out of frame: the Coronadragon<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is a recycling container, ostensibly the property of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notanothercyclingforum.net\/index.php?topic=1287.msg12024#msg12024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rother District Council<\/a> but abandoned by them since the contract was awarded to another refuse collection agency<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Sopranos - Waste Managment Sitdown\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/98sNzxfovC0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>and repurposed as a <span data-dobid=\"hdw\">bin<\/span> for packages from the outside world. Now I only open it wearing gloves. While the contents of envelopes are usually decanted into a plague tray to await the decontaminating effects of time \u2013 laugh if you want* \u2013 boxes of supplies are unceremoniously gutted on the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n<p>One was a delivery of Doublebase Gel, the best moisturizer in the world as far as my wife is concerned. (I&#8217;m a known sceptic of all known gels, lotions and potions applied to the skin \u2013 ick! \u2013 but have also been sold). Hands constantly washed are in dire need of first aid, and this stuff is the bomb.<\/p>\n<p>The other package, a cylinder with a label bearing exquisite calligraphy, was a mystery. I had an outstanding small order for bike parts, but this did not look like the sort of wrapping a repair kit for a Topeak Joe Blow pump would be arriving in.<\/p>\n<p>When I carefully applied the box cutter to it, green leaves immediately peeked out. What fresh hell was this, we both wondered, Therese bearing witness to the proceedings. As more leaves spilled forth, it suddenly struck me: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notanothercyclingforum.net\/index.php?topic=1245.msg11531#msg11531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This must be for Chompsky!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/treasurepic.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10340\" src=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/treasurepic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/treasurepic.jpg 800w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/treasurepic-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/treasurepic-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/zoomspoon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Zoom<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not long ago I\u2019d made the virtual acquaintance of Tom, a Yorkshireman who cycles, <a href=\"https:\/\/workingwallsandwoods.co.uk\/our-woodland-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carves<\/a>, and who knows what else when he&#8217;s not penning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclechat.net\/threads\/round-the-wash-and-up-the-spout.248565\/#post-5613352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beautifully written<\/a> travelogues. (Oh, <a href=\"https:\/\/workingwallsandwoods.co.uk\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here\u2019s<\/a> what else. He\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclechat.net\/threads\/caption-it.259741\/page-2#post-5957099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a dab hand<\/a> with photo editing software.) Aware of my love of the woodland creature who shares our home, he applied his talents to a switch of sycamore: \u201ctarted up a cooking spoon\u201d is how he put it. It has been widely observed that people seem friendlier of late. Obvs YMMV, but that&#8217;s certainly been my experience. I&#8217;ve lost count of the pleasant, if slightly breathless, conversations with people clearly happy to be out and doing something different than what they normally get up to \u2013 probably either working, or worrying about another strand of their life.<\/p>\n<p>Although the forum where the woodcarver and I met was already heavily trafficked, I believe the current situation has increased the thirst for quality <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jollygoodthen_75205\/cyclechatter-8d4ee31ec864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social interaction<\/a> (defined as you wish, but for me, something more than idle chat). My reckoning is that he appreciated the care I put into my contributions, and saw a kindred spirit. &#8220;Filigree high in the rafters&#8221; is how it was put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notanothercyclingforum.net\/bikereader\/contributors\/etc\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">once upon a time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever his motivation to donate his creative labour, one is bid to pay it forward. There are worse articles of faith than &#8216;What goes around comes around&#8217;. Does it?
