If only I had something to say. I have no experience with burning or looting or Twittering. (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jollygoodthen\" target=\"_blank\">Not yet<\/a>, anyway.) Or with being especially disadvantaged, save for the pity many Brits feel for Americans in their hearts.<\/p>\n<p>A. A. Gill saw <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2011-08-12\/london-riots-were-the-bonfire-of-consumers-vanities-a-a-gill.html\" target=\"_blank\">swift opportunism.<\/a> Sensing a blind spot, a weakness, and exploiting it for quick profit, shorting your own neighborhood. So perhaps there was a lesson learned from the market after all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Trickle-down disaster capitalism. The great bank <del>heists<\/del> bailouts, while a redistribution of wealth almost unimaginable orders of magnitude greater than anything on display in Tottenham, weren&#8217;t quite so scary looking.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Oborne in the Telegraph <a title=\"Pirates of East Sussex\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/peteroborne\/100100708\/the-moral-decay-of-our-society-is-as-bad-at-the-top-as-the-bottom\/\" target=\"_blank\">had a satisfying dig at Richard Branson<\/a>, whose train passengers are probably due for a riot at some point, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2011\/aug\/12\/uk-riots-dont-shut-kids-out-now\" target=\"_blank\">Suzanne Moore<\/a> made an eloquent plea in The Guardian to not to shut the kids out: <em>Never woven into the social fabric, how easily they rip it to shreds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And Timothy Burke? <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.swarthmore.edu\/burke\/2011\/08\/11\/a-point-everyone-has-already-made\/\" target=\"_blank\">Just sayin&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I feel I should post about the riots.
