My first. Automatic, I think. Blue with unpainted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bondo_(putty)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bondo<\/a> in one of the rear quarter panels. Lovely bench seats &#8211; remember those? Not necessarily the most comfortable, but if your sweetie was riding shotgun [note: I had no sweetie then] it made for better scooching over than bucket seats\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Late 70s or early 80s <span class=\"bbc_u\">Mazda<\/span><\/strong>, don&#8217;t remember the model. Nothing special. Automatic.<br \/>\nCorrection: <strong><span class=\"bbc_u\">Monza<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"bbc_u\">Volkswagon Dasher<\/span><\/strong>, also of uncertain vintage and transmission.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dasher.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8334\" src=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dasher.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dasher.jpg 800w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dasher-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dasher-768x534.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Call campus security<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That was my last car for a while. <a class=\"bbc_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prettygoodbritain.com\/pics\/hitching.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Did some hitchhiking<\/a>. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jollygoodthen_75205\/like-a-rolling-stone-19dd0de02a76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>On the road again: <strong><span class=\"bbc_u\">Toyota Tercel<\/span><\/strong>, stick shift. I loved this car. Treated it terribly; apparently had no idea that Toyotas needed oil. Burned out an engine, replaced it. Totalled when somebody rammed into me zooming out of a gas station. My introduction to the jaws of life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tercel.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8335\" src=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tercel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My wife had a <span class=\"bbc_u\">red car<\/span> for a while. Sorry, don&#8217;t remember what it was. Automatic. It suffered from various seemingly undiagnosable ailments, and applying the brakes could require advanced notice.<br \/>\n<strong>Nissan Sentra<\/strong>, she has just told me.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"bbc_u\">1992 Toyota Corolla<\/span><\/strong>, automatic. Bought with 5k miles, the newest car we&#8217;ve ever owned. Carried us across the US. Eventually shipped it to the UK, the mafia-types who booked it in at Port Elizabeth NJ warning us not to leave the dustbuster in the back seat as it might get stolen. Turns out goodfellas give good advice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sopranoscar.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8336\" src=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/sopranoscar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Very fond of this one, which my mechanic always called a &#8220;left hooker&#8221;. Died of neglect (a broken heart, it&#8217;s said) when we both went without a <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@ohio2england\/buckle-up-429524fb18c7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British licence<\/a> for a stretch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cargone.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8337\" src=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cargone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cargone.jpg 700w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/cargone-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The buyer thought he might be able to get good resale price for the moss.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"bbc_u\">2005 Toyota Corolla<\/span><\/strong>, automatic; a &#8220;right hooker&#8221;, if you will. It gets us where we need to go, and the local <a class=\"bbc_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prettygoodbritain.com\/pics\/undercar.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fauna<\/a> like it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/newcorolla.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8338\" src=\"http:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/newcorolla.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/newcorolla.jpg 600w, https:\/\/prettygoodbritain.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/newcorolla-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Looks like this except different colour.
