A little-known codicil of the Treaty of Perpetual Peace between Scotland and England in 1502 decreed that each side give up something. Scotland agreed to cede all good weather to England. England made the playing of bagpipes punishable by deportation to Scotland. Despite some grumbles on both sides of the border, not to mention a wee invasion by the Scots in 1513 which redefined “perpetual”, the two countries unified in a small ceremony in Gretna Green in the early 17th century.
